Multi-Threaded Game Engines

Post by (MI6) lolpierandom on Fri Oct 29, 2010 2:38 pm

It has come to our attention, from some of our more technology oriented members, that there is a newer technology around, called "Multi-Threaded Game Engines".

Multi-Threaded engines use ALL the cores of your computer, and distributes the load across all cores.

I.E. if you have a quad core, instead of focusing the load on 1 core with 100% load, it will spread it across all 4, and each will handle 25% of CA's load. This will result in MASSIVE frame rate increase, possibly doubling your FPS.

This is also relatively cheap, only costing as much as it costs to hire new developers. Note that there will be a small server downtime(1 day-1 1/2 days), but that's a fairly small price to pay, for such improved FPS.

So, opinions?

This is a draft post, and will be worked on. Feel free to spell/grammar check, and suggest for improvements.

Doesn't it need to incorporate all FOUR solutions? :/

No, don't delete this thread, we need a 7-part official thread.

First part is a short introduction to what we're doing now(lag reduction of all types)

5 parts are telling everyone about each individual idea we came up with, like this one.

The last part will be telling people HOW they can support these changes to be implemented and a quick summary of what supporting FFCA on this will do for the game.

Remember to courteous and polite as always. Don't provoke trolls and flamers.

Packets? 0.o

I meant that each individual idea would take up 1 small section of the overall official FFCA thread.

I think a State of the Game address speech would be cool.

First give an intro on the problem.

Possible solutions we're suggesting in point form.

Description of each solution. 1 Para per solution.

After telling people what the solutions mean in detail in the descriptions section, start a new paragraph on how all the solutions work together to achieve yada yada yada.

And then the limitations.

Lastly conclusion. Things like how to show your support for the FFCA suggestions - going around spreading the word, keeping it bumped, etc.
Credits are important too.

Interesting.

Yes, model it after General G's usual posts.

word of advice, before you get a complete idea.
Just post what ever you have as of right now on your first post (edit it), then we can help you write one.
