Memory Leak in the client Empty Memory Leak in the client

Post by THATSghetto Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:46 pm

izitchi posted this on the forums http://forum.nexon.net/CombatArms/forums/1/6047315/ShowThread.aspx
saying that the game client had a memory leak, which results in a ridiculous amount of RAM being used, resulting in sudden (and very extreme) lag spikes, as well as a generally lower fps for players in general. Kalika said she'd bring it up to Nexon, but I think we need to make sure nexon hears this. At the very least, keep bumping that thread so that it stays on the front page, nexon will be more likely to do something about it.

Yeh, it's good that he noticed it, since even Kalika didn't know Surprised

hope they do something about it.

I had noticed it ever since the first HUD patch. I just didn't know it was called a memory leak and assumed it just had to do with the file size.

I just thought the game engine/coding done for a free FPS sucked.

Yeah I remember him suggesting that. It really does make sense too, and it also explains the "Out of memory" error me and some other people get. I've also noticed that tabbing out can cause the error to appear more often. I would assume the actually programmers know what they are doing and tested for things like this but who knows, this one bug could have slipped by.

Oh and I have 6GB of RAM. (although I think this error has something to do with the Windows heap? or something... I don't know enough about this)

I like to think of it as another example of how much computing power is truly necessary to keep up with Nexon's laziness. The minimum requirements are completely bogus to me

I really hope this repack thing makes a big difference for us players with lower end computers.

So we should also request for an edit to minimum requirements?

Makes sense to me, one reason I started playing was because I thought my computer's lousy specs would hold up just fine.
But they didn't

I was talking with Itzichi in DT vent a few days ago.

Itzichi said that although it won't fix the leak itself a multi-threaded engine would make it less of a problem, assuming you have at least a dual core.

Although he also said they would probably need to get a new engine in order to implement multi-threading. They probably won't do that because the Juniper engine is cheap to use. He gave an example saying the Juniper engine only costs them about 5% of their profits to use, another one like th Unreal engine would cost them up to 20% of their profits.

But if we could convince Nexon that a less laggy CA will make the game infinitely more respectable, more people will join to fill in the gap.

But I'm getting confused here, isn't the "engine" a type of software as opposed to hardware? So wouldn't developing a stronger engine be a one-off investment? Wouldn't the only "upkeep" it would need be glitch fixes or patches? If so, then their cuts in profit would be temporary.

Fill me in here if you can, my knowledge of game design is limited.

Nexon doesn't make their own game engine (in fact, as far as I know, not a lot of companies do) they buy it from another company.

I only know so much too, but from what he told me it seems like they have to pay to even get the engine in the first place, and after that they have to continue paying a certain percent to keep using it.

Better engines cost more to buy and keep basically.

Wouldn't a new engine boost up the graphics requirements though? Or am I mistaking it for something else...?

I'm pretty sure they would have to actually improve the graphics to need better graphic requirements. But a stronger processor may be needed to process a more complex engine?

It could very well be the complete opposite, better engine might mean less specs, like I said, really need an expert on this....
